Leveraging virtualization to optimize high-availability system configurations

چکیده
Leveraging redundant resources is a common means of addressing availability requirements, but it often implies redundant costs as well. At the same time, virtualization technologies are bursting into data centers with the promise of reducing costs through resource consolidation. Can virtualization and High Availability (HA) technologies be combined to optimize availability while minimizing costs? Yes, but merging them properly introduces new challenges. Drawing on practical experiences from an IBM development test lab, this paper looks at how virtualization technologies, methodologies, and techniques can augment and amplify traditional HA approaches while avoiding potential pitfalls. Special attention is paid to resource sharing, applying conceptual models (such as Active/Active and Active/Passive) to virtualized environments, stretching virtual environments across physical machine boundaries, and avoiding hazards that await the unwary.

Comparison between four dissimilar solar panel configurations
Several studies on photovoltaic systems focused on how it operates and energy required in operating it. Little attention is paid on its configurations, modeling of mean time to system failure, availability, cost benefit and comparisons of parallel and series–parallel designs. In this research work, four system configurations were studied. Configuration I consists of two sub-components arranged ...

Availability of business-critical application servers is an issue of paramount importance that has received special attention from the industry and academia. To improve the availability of application servers, we have conducted a study of virtualization technology and software rejuvenation that follows a proactive fault-tolerant approach to counter act the software aging problem. We present Mar...

System-level virtualization is today enjoying a rebirth, after first gaining popularity in the 1970s as a technique to effectively share what were then considered large computing resources to subsequently fade from the spotlight as individual workstations gained in popularity with a “one machine – one user” approach. One reason for this resurgence is that the simple workstation has grown in cap...
متن کاملHigh availability using virtualization - 3RC
High availability has always been one of the main problems for a data center. Till now high availability was achieved by host per host redundancy, a highly expensive method in terms of hardware and human costs. A new approach to the problem can be offered by virtualization. Using virtualization, it is possible to achieve a redundancy system for all the services running on a data center. This ne...
